Introductory Lecture on Internal Family SystemsSM Therapy
featuring CeCe Sykes, LCSW

Tuesday, February 22, 2011 from 7 pm – 9 pm
Davis Lecture Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College, Dublin

hosted by Elizabeth Keating

Internal Family SystemsSM Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that helps people to connect with their intuitive wisdom and identify what is really going on on the inside. IFS involves a client and therapist collaborating to allow this exploration to be safe and at the client’s preferred pace. This is an empowering experience that, when successful, brings about a greater sense of inner peace. It has been helpful to people wanting to face a wide variety of problems, from severe depression at one end of the continuum to a vague sense of dissatisfaction with life at the other.

IFS was developed by an American family therapist who listened deeply to his clients who were living with eating disorders. In 1985, Dr. Richard C. Schwartz learned that his clients were aware of distinct “parts” of themselves that felt and thought differently to each other. His clients taught him that their parts organised like a family and, like any family, members didn’t always live in harmony. Since he was already a family systems therapist, Dr. Schwartz adapted that experience to his clients’ inner families. This was the beginning of IFSSM Therapy. Today it is used by thousands of psychotherapists and other helping professionals in the United States, where it has been described as one of the most innovative psychotherapies to emerge in recent years.

For the first time in Ireland, we welcome a very experienced IFS therapist and teacher, Cece Sykes, LCSW. During this lecture, Ms. Sykes will introduce the model and talk about how it has helped people. There will be a chance to ask questions. This evening will be a chance for people to get a deeper understanding of themselves and for those in the helping professions to get their first glimpse of Internal Family SystemsSM Therapy.
